Emilie Lauren Jones has performed at a variety of events and venues across England from the back rooms of pubs to centuries old castles. Previously published in HCE Magazine and I am not a silent poet, Emilie’s poetry is due to appear in upcoming anthologies with Half Moon Books, Beautiful Dragons Collaborations and One World Publications as well as Under the Radar Magazine.

In 2019 Emilie was one of the commissioned poets for the UK City of Culture project ‘Humans of Cov’. She was the 2019 PGR Slam winner, Stafford Word Slam winner, and a Gorilla Slam finalist. Emilie has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Birmingham. She is Poet in Residence for Hillz FM and part of the 2020 cohort for the Nine Arches Press ‘Dynamo’ scheme.

Matt Black lives in Leamington Spa and writes for adults and children. A specialist in commissions, he is a joyful mischief maker, a serious entertainer, a reluctant grown-up and a celebrationist. He was Derbyshire Poet Laureate from 2011-2013.

His poems are published in magazines and his most recent collections for adults are Tales from The Leaking Boot (Iron Press, 2018), and Spoon Rebellion (Smith Doorstop, 2017). His play The Storm Officer toured in 2020 and his next publication is Sniffing Lamp-posts by Moonlight (Upside Down, 2020) featuring poems inspired by dogs, based on his one-man show The Snoopy Question.

We are no longer posting the link via our social media channels. Upon written request to info@obheal.ie with a sentence outlining your reason for participation, a link to join the session will be emailed to you on the evening of the event. The session is expected to run for between 2-3 hours.

The evening will feature three parts:

8.30pm: Five Word Challenge (max 30 – after the allotted 15 minutes writing time);
9.30pm: Featured Guest Poets (20 mins each);
10:20pm: Open-Mic Session for original poetry (max 30).

Julie Breathnach-Banwait is a poet, psychologist and mother. Coiscéim published her début book Dánta Póca, a collection full of ‘powerful feelings’ and ‘dark themes’ (An tOllamh – Ciarán Mac Murchaidh, 2018). The magazine The Irish Scene (Western Australia) has regularly published her poems in Irish. Her poem ‘Blue coat’ won a prize at the Cathal Buí festival poetry competition in 2019. Julie has been based in Western Australia for many years now. She spent some time travelling in China and Malaysia with her family. She is originally from Ceantar na nOileán in Connemara.

Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill grew up in the Irish-speaking areas of West Kerry and in Tipperary. She studied English and Irish at University College Cork and became part of a group of Irish language poets who were published in the literary magazine Innti.

She has published numerous collections of poems in Irish, including An Dealg Droighin (The Mercier Press, 1981), Féar Suaithinseach (An Sagart, 1984), Feis (An Sagart, 1991) and Cead Aighnis (An Sagart, 1998), and The Gallery Press has published her five most recent collections, with translations into English, Pharoah’s Daughter (1990), The Astrakhan Cloak (translations by Paul Muldoon, 1992), The Water Horse (translations by Medbh McGuckian and Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, 1999), The Fifty Minute Mermaid (translations by Paul Muldoon, 2007) and Northern Lights (translations by Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, Peter Fallon, Eamon Grennan, Bernard O’Donoghue and Dennis O’Driscoll, 2018).

Ní Dhomhnaill held the Heimbold Chair in Irish Studies at Villanova University in 2001 and has taught at Boston College and New York University. She has received many scholarships, prizes, and bursaries and has also won numerous international awards for works which have been translated into French, German, Polish, Italian, Norwegian, Estonian, Turkish, Japanese and English. In 2018 she was awarded the Zbigniew Herbert International Literary Award and was the first woman selected for this honour. She lives in Dublin, is a member of Aosdána and was Ireland Professor of Poetry from 2001-2004.

Chandrika Narayanan-Mohan and Shaunna Lee Lynch

Chandrika Narayanan-Mohan is a Dublin-based arts manager and writer from India, who has also lived in North America, Sweden, Turkey, and the UK. She has been featured on The Moth and Mortified podcasts, with work aired on NPR and Irish radio. She also regularly performs at literary and cabaret events in Ireland.

Chandrika was selected for the Irish Writers Centre XBorders programmes in 2018 and 2020. Chandrika’s poetry is included in Writing Home: The ‘New Irish’ Poets from Dedalus Press, and was recently published in The Honest Ulsterman. This year, Chandrika will be the first ever guest editor of Trumpet, Poetry Ireland’s literary pamphlet.

Shaunna Lee Lynch is a Cork-native writer, actor, director, producer and the current reigning All-Ireland Poetry Slam Champion. As a spoken word artist she has performed at many events around Ireland and abroad including Cork City Culture Night, Electric Picnic, LitFest (France), The Garden Party (Lisbon), Fire and Dust (Coventry), among others. She holds a Level 8 BA Honours Degree in Drama from Ireland’s Conservatory of Music and Drama (DIT) and has been involved in many theatre and film projects over the past decade.

In 2019 Shaunna wrote, co-produced and acted in the play Wishful Thinking which ran as part of the Dublin Fringe Festival and the Cork Arts Theatre Emerging Artists Programme. Also in 2019, her poetry was featured in the chapbook paper incantations as part of Ó Bhéal’s ‘spoken worlds’ series. Her writing playfully weaves modern feminism and pop culture with politics, social commentary and tradition.
