Entries made outside of these dates cannot be considered. You may submit as many films as you like &#8211; each must include a poem (present in its entirety, audibly and\/or visually) and must have been completed inside two years of the opening submission date. <\/p>\n<p>Entries may not exceed 10 minutes in duration. Non-English or non-Irish language films will require English subtitles. <\/p>\n<p><center><strong><font size=\"3\" color=\"green\">Awards and Prizes<\/font><\/strong><\/center><\/p>\n<p>A shortlist of 30 International poetry-films are screened at \u00d3\u00a0Bh\u00e9al&#8217;s Poetry-Film festival in the Cork Arts Theatre. One overall winner will receive the \u00d3 Bh\u00e9al award for best International poetry-film, designed by glass artist Michael Ray, along with a prize of <strong>500 euros<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>A second shortlist of 15 Irish poetry-films will also be screened at the festival. A prize of <strong>250 euros<\/strong> will be awarded for the best Irish poetry-film. We&#8217;re very grateful for these seven years of prosperity, an absolute privilege and pleasure to work with \u00dana Feely, Mick Hannigan and the IndieCork festival committee, sharing a vibrant and invaluable, spirited, enormously beneficial journey. The film delves into Mosab&#8217;s journey as he navigates the complexities of living in oppression and occupation. Detained by the Israeli military, Mosab&#8217;s imprisonment sparked an outcry from the international literary community, highlighting the profound impact of his work and the power of poetry as a tool.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.obheal.ie\/poetryfilm\/Abdullah_Harun_Ilhan_2026_sm.jpg\" height=\"280\" width=\"233\" border=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"1\">Director: <strong>Abdullah Harun Ilhan<\/strong> (Palestine\/Turkiye)<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"1\">Abdullah Harun \u0130lhan was born in Malatya, T\u00fcrkiye. His interest in visual arts began at an early age. This interest led him to shoot his first short film at the age of eleven. More than one hundred short films and documentaries he made were shown at international film festivals and were awarded several awards. Ilhan graduated from various universities and film schools from the USA, UK, T\u00fcrkiye, South Korea and Qatar. He has contributed to film and photography projects in around 70 countries. He continues his work in Turkish, English and Arabic languages.<\/font><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.obheal.ie\/poetryfilm\/PFlaurel2025mwide.jpg\" width=\"490\" height=\"150\" border=\"0\"\/><\/font><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"1\"><em>\u201cA new phrase has entered my lexicon since this year&#8217;s \u00d3 Bh\u00e9al Poetry Film Competition &#8211; Documentary Poetry Film &#8211; It&#8217;s where a film can have elements of poetry and elements of short documentary combined. As a poetry film maker, myself, I am excited to make one of these, and I already have a Gold Standard to aspire to. That&#8217;s the wonderful &#8211; Free Words &#8211; A Poet from Gaza &#8211; overall winner this year. In it Director Abdullah Harun Ilhan interweaves the deeply moving poetry of Mosab Abu Toha with his skill as a documentary maker to create an important piece of film art. Together with the playwright Svetlana Petriychuk, Evgenia Berkovich has been under arrest and jailed since May 2023 on charges of &#8220;public calls to terrorism&#8221;. On the ninth of January 2024, before the verdict was supposed to be announced, she read her final speech in verse.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.obheal.ie\/poetryfilm\/Anya-RyzhkovaSm.jpg\" height=\"200\" width=\"233\" border=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"1\">Director: <strong>Anya Ryzhkova<\/strong> (Germany)<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"1\">Anya (Anna) Ryzhkova is an independent animation artist and filmmaker. She was born in Kaliningrad in 1998. In 2007 she moved to Germany and grew up in Chemnitz. Since 2019 she is studying Media Art and Design at the Bauhaus University Weimar.<\/font><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.obheal.ie\/poetryfilm\/PFlaurels2024mwide.jpg\" width=\"490\" height=\"150\" border=\"0\"\/><\/font><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<font size=\"1\"><\/font><font size=\"1\"><em>\u201cThis poetry film grips you from the first, with its ironic, chilling tone. Juddering chalk drawings in primary colours create a discordant atmosphere akin to imprisonment, as courtroom noise permeates the background soundscape. An activist herself, she became a prophet of the movement and her poems anthems for it. She died of an overdose on 3 October 1993. The visual elements I was looking for were right there. The text of the poem was powering the vision in this beautiful language, I could not help but respond warmly to this film. It was a huge challenge to choose one overall winner in such a feast of poetry films, one which shone. This one did it for me. There were lots of submissions with amazing visuals, but their respective poems were not crafted, featured tired language or had polemic and a tendency to preach. Others had well-crafted poetry but the film did not work with the poem. There were some very special ones where both poem and film were well crafted, edited, and worked together &#8212; and from these it was very hard to choose just one. <\/em><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"1\"><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/font><font size=\"1\"><em>Kayla Jeanson\u2019s Descrambled Eggs took both mediums into account and tells a bold, original, engaging and funny story. It&#8217;s a really entertaining piece and there are many small touches that demonstrate that the creators really put thought into the visuals and delivery of the poem while they were planning and shooting it. The poetry-film competition is about both mediums working together. During the 1990s and early 2000s she wrote and directed short narrative and experimental films that were screened and awarded widely at international film festivals.
